A small Japanese suribachi and surikogi set, the mortar and pestle often regarded as essential in any Japanese kitchen. It gives you a greater degree of control when bruising, crushing, grinding or pounding ingredients.

The Iwami ware mortar is handcrafted in western Shimane Prefecture, with an exterior glaze mixed from local soil, crushed stone and water, and a hand-combed interior textured to grind ingredients effectively. Fired at over 1300°C, it's a strong ceramic suited to sharp and hard ingredients. The pestle is handcrafted in Kagoshima from sansho (Japanese prickly ash) found in the foothills of Kirishima, the wood traditionally used for surikogi, said to add a delicate flavour to food; branches are harvested each autumn with some bark left in place.
