Natural sand coloured matcha bowl with small spout on wooden table

Kittate Spouted Matcha Bowl - Sand

Nankei Pottery
$95.00
5 left

A sand-toned Japanese spouted matcha bowl (katakuchi), handmade by Nankei Pottery in Yokkaichi from unglazed Banko-yaki clay. The straight-sided Kittate form and carved spout make it a whisking bowl for matcha, a yuzamashi for cooling boiled water to the right temperature for green tea, and a vessel for sharing, with a controlled pour into smaller cups.

The wide opening gives a bamboo whisk plenty of room to move. The Suna-neri clay feels like a smooth stone in your hands: tactile and non-slip. Left unglazed inside and out, the porous, iron-rich clay absorbs the tea's harsher tannins, softening astringency and highlighting delicate flavours.

Also available in black.

Care: Hand wash only with a mild, neutral detergent and a soft sponge; avoid abrasive scrubbers or harsh cleaners. Air-dry thoroughly before storing.

As this piece is unglazed, oil stains can occur more easily than on glazed ceramics, but they can usually be removed with a little detergent and a brush.

Because these bowls are unglazed and crafted from raw, mineral-rich earth, you may notice subtle orange blushes or tiny dark iron spots on the surface. These are not defects, but the natural mineral colours of the clay reacting to the high heat of the kiln. Each piece is a unique record of its firing, carrying the honest fingerprints of the Japanese landscape.

Meet the Maker: Nankei Pottery

Based in the ceramic heartland of Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture, Nankei Pottery has been a steward of Japanese craftsmanship since 1913. Originally founded as a clay refiner, the family-run kiln eventually transitioned into master potters, specializing in the 300-year-old tradition of Banko-yaki (Banko ware). Today, under fourth-generation leadership, they are renowned for their "Banjikyusu" philosophy—the belief that even in difficult times, pausing to brew a perfect cup of tea can turn misfortune into fortune. Every piece, from their signature purple-clay teapots to their minimalist tableware, is managed entirely in-house to ensure a seamless blend of historical technique and modern functional beauty.

Nankei Pottery

Since 1913, Nankei Pottery has been refining the relationship between earth and tea. Based in Yokkaichi, the heart of Japan's Banko-yaki tradition, this family-run kiln spent its first sixty years as a specialist clay refiner before transitioning into master pottery in 1972. This deep, "dirt-first" expertise is what sets them apart—they don't just shape clay; they engineer it to enhance the flavuor of your brew. Every piece follows the philosophy of Banjikyusu, the belief that a single, intentional cup of tea can "turn misfortune into fortune" by providing a much-needed pause in a busy and distracting world. By blending centuries-old techniques with a clean, minimalist aesthetic, Nankei creates functional heirlooms that feel as grounded as the landscape they came from.
