A small Karajá ceramic sculpture of a jaguar, made by Karajá Indigenous women from clay and painted with natural pigments: black from genipap fruit and red from annatto. Making these animals is a craft unique to the women, and the sculptures have a playful role, showing the fauna in Karajá life; it's through play that Karajá children learn the stories, myths and values of their people.
The Karajá people live across a vast region along the Araguaia and Javaé rivers in Brazil's Centre-West, south of the Amazon biome, in 21 villages with an estimated population of 2,900. Karajá graphics, crafts and feather art carry their memory and identity well beyond the villages. As each sculpture is handmade, shapes, expressions, fired clay colours and painted details differ from piece to piece, with small imperfections to be celebrated.
