 Product Description

This Ikebana Gift Set contains the perfect tools for creating stunning floral arrangements. The set includes a pair of Japanese Ikebana scissors, a flower frog providing a stable base for the flowers, and a Japanese ceramic bowl for the perfect presentation. Get creative and enjoy your Ikebana!

Each set includes:

-x1 Sentei Ikebana Scissors

-x1 Kenzan Flower Frog - Medium

-x1 Rust Kairagi Bowl

-x1 Bamboo Basket with Lid - Large

Ikenobo style scissors for traditional Japanese flower arranging. The short, broad blades are strong enough for woody cuts in hard stems. They take a bit of getting used to, but if the discipline of ikebana is something you aspire to, it’s well worth it.

Go the whole way with the discipline of the traditional ikebana schools - Ohara, Ikenobo etc, or head off-piste and do your own thing. The spiky bases hold woody and green stalks, in any position you want. Make criss-cross cuts into the bottom of larger twigs, to stick them in more easily. Lower into water inside the ceramic bowl, and top up daily.

Care: Most of Niwaki's sharp tools are made from carbon steel - this means they will, through regular use, stain (and eventually rust) and gradually lose their edge. Caring for them involves three things…

1. Correct Use:

Japanese steel is hard and sharp, and can be more brittle than some people are used to - it will chip if abused

2. Keeping Them Clean:

Remove leaf resin, rust and gunk with a Crean Mate and water

Dry, wipe over with Camellia oil and store in a dry place

3. Keeping Them Sharp:

New tools won’t need sharpening for some time, but after a while you’ll notice them gradually lose their edge.

About Niwaki

Niwaki was established in 1997, and means garden tree. Japanese gardens are landscapes, microcosms of nature, and the trees are all shaped to fit into those landscapes. Niwaki evolved from founder Jake Hobson's discovery of Japanese gardens through his time living in Japan. Their range of beautiful hand forged tools and useful objects are carefully handmade by Japanese blacksmiths.

Niwaki's Care Guide:

"Most of our sharp tools are made from carbon steel - this means they may, through regular use, stain (and eventually rust) and gradually lose their edge. Caring for them involves three things…"

1. Correct Use:
  • Japanese steel is hard and sharp, and can be more brittle than some people are used to - it will chip if abused
  • Do not cut wire, metal, stone, plastic or any other hard material (even bamboo fibres and some very hard woods, especially knots and burrs, can damage steel edges)
  • Do not twist or apply uneven pressure
  • Cut diagonally across branches (not straight across) so you cut along the fibres
  • Pay attention to our maximum cut dimensions, and don’t overdo it (shears are not loppers)
  • Use the base of the blades, not the tips, for heavier cuts
2. Keeping Them Clean:
  • Remove leaf resin, rust and gunk with a Crean Mate and water
  • Dry, wipe over with Camellia oil and store in a dry place
