The Futamono Teppatsu is a striking example of how Nankei Pottery translates ancient Buddhist forms into modern, functional art. "Futamono" simply means a lidded vessel, while "Teppatsu" refers to the traditional iron alms bowls used by monks. This vessel takes that historic, rounded silhouette and reimagines it in Nankei’s signature Kuro-neri (black clay).
Fully unglazed inside and out, this lidded jar is a tactile, grounding object designed to hold anything from specialty salts to jewellery. Its heat-resistant Banko-yaki properties also make it an exceptional vessel for traditional incense rituals.
The Teppatsu Form: The bowl features a soft, inward-curving rim—a shape originally designed to prevent spilling. In this lidded version, it creates a seamless, bulbous silhouette that feels incredibly satisfying to hold in the palm of your hand.
A Meditative Incense Burner: The deep, rounded body is perfectly suited for use as an incense burner. When filled with white incense ash, it provides a stable and safe base to stand your favorite incense sticks. The lid can be replaced when not in use to keep spent ash contained and out of sight.
Raw Kuro-neri Clay: The iron-rich black clay is left completely unglazed. It possesses a deep, matte charcoal finish that feels like smooth volcanic stone. Over time, the clay will absorb the natural oils from your touch, developing a quiet, sophisticated luster.
Breathable Storage: Because the interior is unglazed and porous, the clay "breathes." This makes it an excellent vessel for storing salt (which stays dry) or small amounts of tea leaves, though it is equally at home on a vanity holding rings or keepsakes.

Incense Rituals: If using as a burner, ensure the bowl is placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Allow the ash and vessel to cool completely before replacing the lid.
Care: Hand wash only with mild and neutral detergent and soft sponge. Avoid abrasive scrubbers or harsh cleaners, as these can scratch the surface of the pottery. Allow the bowl to air-dry thoroughly before storing away.

This product highlights the raw texture of the clay. While oil stains may occur more easily than on glazed items, they can typically be removed by applying a small amount of detergent and scrubbing with a brush.
Because these pieces are unglazed and crafted from raw, mineral-rich earth, you may notice subtle orange blushes or tiny dark iron spots on the surface. These are not defects, but the natural mineral colours of the clay reacting to the high heat of the kiln. Each piece is a unique record of its firing, carrying the honest fingerprints of the Japanese landscape.
